well between the two, MCB and IB, i agree with you that MCB has a lot more intricate details and memorization, but in choosing between the two, i would just choose which ever one is more related to what you want to do.
what is it that you want to do in the future?? if you're planning on med school, i would just stick with MCB, since you are going to have to know all the material for it.
does this help?

Congrats on the admissions.

Speaking regarding the Computer Science admission to UCM, I will add that it will definitely be a great opportunity. Costs throughout the UCs will not differ that much, but overall living costs at UCM will definitely will be cheaper.

As for the academics, UCM will provide you a UC level education, so do not feel as you would be getting lesser education here. In a field that is traditionally as broad as Computer Science, I think you would find UCM a lot more convenient and friendly. At a bigger school, in such a field, you could easily become lost in the crowd of others with the similar major. But at UCM, you will be able to connect with professors and students a LOT easier than at some of the bigger schools. What you might lack a bit in reputation, you will gain in hands-on experience that you won't find many other places. In such a technical field as CSE, this might be a welcome relief, and I definitely urge you to look at that as well.

I heard that MCB is a lot of memorizing intricate details where as IB is more health sciences focused, and therefore more relevant. What do you have to say between majoring in MCB and IB?

Congratulations on great admissions, Student C!

As for the deliberation between UCD and Urbana-
1) UCD will definitely be closer to come, and since it is a public university, the cost will be significantly lower, and obviously no snow! These are definitely important aspects to consider- depending on your family's financial status, your desire to remain close to home.

2) As a former advisor at UCD, I can attest to the fact that engineering will not be less challenging at UCD than at Urbana. This is a common misconception considering that UCD is typically known more for its biomedical engineering and stricter sciences (ie biology, plant biology, etc) However, the engineering department at UCD is impacted and if you do attend UCD and leave the engineering department, getting back in is much more difficult than one would think.
Perhaps points to consider in this decision might include-
a) size of classes
b) types of classes offered
c) summer/ school year internship opportunities
d) if you're interested, opportunities to study abroad
e) 4-5 year graduation rates

I cannot speak to Urbana's engineering department, so I'll steer clear of any comments there!

3) Best of luck!

first of all, congrats into getting into all those wonderful schools. i have read the comments left by the others, and agree with them. i go to UCD and i actually transferred there as a biochem/molecular bio major. i am not too sure about Berkeley and their biochem program, but from what i have heard, and my other friends from JC who also transferred as bio majors all went to either davis, SD or LA. i think all these schools would be great for biochem, SD and davis might be a little better (as said from previous comments)
as for your other questions:
1) i dont know, but i'm at UCD
2) molecular bio is just strictly bio, chem/ochem, physics, etc and all the other courses that come with it. (mostly intended for pre-med people)
bioengineering/biomedical engg is more for people who are interested in careers involving more biotech actually. you are usually a biochem/molecular bio major if you want are pre-med.
3 and 4 i am not too sure about (4 because i dont go there, and so i dont know too much about life at berkeley)
i dont know if what i said helps or not but i hope it does help. please dont hesitate to ask more questions.

1. I was wondering if we had anyone in the panel who is currently studying at UCSD?

2. Is there much difference between majoring in Molecular Biology vs. Bioengineering/Biomedical Engg?

3. I heard that the bioengg/biomed engg programs at the UCs are not accredited by ABET. Is that something I should be concerned about if majoring in that subject?

4. How is student and campus life at UC Berkeley? Are they collaborative or is it all independent? Are TA discussion sessions, tutoring, etc.. helpful and available?

I agree that UCSD is a great option for this student. The student should read this report (over a weekend) from the world's renowned Milken Institute that did a comprehensive study on Biotechnology, and ranked several universities. http://www.milkeninstitute.org/pdf/mind2mrkt_2006.pdf
The student must see Pages 77 and 80 of the report which rank UCSD in the top 10.

Regarding Competitiveness, the student must be willing to stretch and go to a higher competition school. We all must go beyond our comfort zone, and stretch - only then do our true capabilities and talents come out.

Are there special scholarships that she can apply to, to bridge the differential cost between UCSB and other UCs? UCSB has the unique 'College of Creative Studies' which is a great place to study, especially in today's corporate world that is looking for new ideas and innovation.

It is going to depend on what you want to do. If you are interested in Business, they you should probably pick a place that is good for business. I would recommend doing some other major along with business. That would give you a huge benefit when applying to jobs.
If you want to go to UCSB, you should figure out a way to pay for it. You are going to be at college for 4 years, so you should go to a place that you feel comfortable at. Colleges offer work-study programs, which would be a way to fund your college education.
